In an effort to preserve Mexican ancestral traditions like the celebration of Día de Muertos, Las Palomas Beach and Golf Resort will unveil a monumental Alfonsine sculpture, La Sirena del Desierto, which is currently being developed by renowned sculptor Javier Zarazúa.
Remembering those who left before us in a colorful way with offerings, altars, and flowers is a part of Mexican culture, and is why this amazing sculpture is being made. It represents the mysticism of Día de Muertos as well as the conservation of oceans as a relevant theme to the region of the Sea of Cortez, where Las Palomas Beach and Golf Resort in Rocky Point is located.
The creator of the Alfonsine work, Javier Zarazúa, is known nationally for his impressive sculptures permeated with surrealism and tradition that have been shown in parades of massive carnivals and installed on campuses and esplanades. His work on the over 9 meters tall sculpture will bring to life a desert mermaid, full of colors and elements like skulls, fish, flowers, and shells made from materials like steel, plaster and papier-mâché. It will be installed in the main entrance of Las Palomas and will be the main feature for its Día de Muertos celebration.
In addition to a celebration of the faithfully departed, altars for the dead by artist Xóchitl Ávila will be installed with help from the staff at Las Palomas, who are preparing a great Día de Muertos carnival to include a procession with floats and a march of catrinas, as well as live music to celebrate the way only Mexicans know how.
